Coach Cross Names Captains

The University of Toledo men's basketball program is preparing the the 2009-10 campaign. This Friday, October 16th, is the first official day of practice for the Rockets, with the first exhibition game coming up on November 10th. With the start of practice just days away, head coach Gene Cross has named his 2009-10 captains. Read on for more.

The University of Toledo men's basketball program is preparing the the 2009-10 campaign. This Friday, October 16th, is the first official day of practice for the Rockets. The exhibition season kicks off on November 10th with a game against Central (OH) State at Savage Arena, and then the regular season kicks off with a game at Savage Arena against Eastern Illinois.

With practices starting in just two days, UT head basketball coach Gene Cross has announced his 2009-10 captains. Junior Justin Anyijong, sophomore Larry Bastfield, and freshman Jake Barnett will serve as captains this year for the Rockets.

"All good teams have a core of good leadership and I couldn't be happier with the captains we have chosen," said Coach Cross. He added, "I'm looking forward to Justin, Larry, and Jake being leaders, not just on the court but on campus as well.

Justin Anyijong is a 6-9, 205 pound forward/center. He is the leading returning scorer and rebounder on the team, averaging 9.7 ppg and 6.4 rpg last year. He also led the team in blocked shots and was 7th in the MAC in rebounding.

Larry Bastfield is a 5-11, 190 pound point guard for the Rockets. He became the starting point guard halfway through the season last year and tied for 6th in the MAC with 2.9 assists per contest during conference games.

Jake Barnett is a 6-6, 190 pound true freshman. He averaged 8.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg last year at Notre Dame (MA) Prep. His team went 29-6, losing in the first round of the National Prep Championship.

The first official practice will this Friday, with the first exhibition game on Tuesday, November 10th, at Savage Arena. Tip off is scheduled for 7:oopm.
