Oklahoma DE to Visit Toledo

Oklahoma DE to Visit Toledo

Coach Beckman and his staff are looking to bolster the Rocket defensive line in the 2009 recruiting class. This weekend the Rockets will have an important visitor in from the state of Oklahoma. Read on for more on this defensive end prospect from Oklahoma City.

Christian Smith is a defensive end from Carl Alberts High School in Oklahoma City, OK. The 6-2, 235 pound defensive end recorded 94 tackles with 7 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in 2008. That was good enough to earn him several accolades. He was named OCA All-State, Daily Oklahoman All-State, Daily Oklahoman Big-All City, and he was also named the 5A-2 All District Lineman of the Year.

Smith anchored a defense that helped lead Carl Alberts HS to a 12-2 record and a state runner-up distinction in the playoffs.

When asked about Christian's abilities, Carl Albert High School football coach Gary Rose said, "(Christian) has great technician and great physical ability. He plays hard and played full-time both ways at tight end and defensive end for us."

On the recruiting front, Smith has offers from Toledo, Ohio University, Northern Iowa, Sam Houston State, and Missouri State. He took an official visit to Ohio University this past weekend, where OU offensive coordinator Tim Albin has been recruiting him. The first of what appears to be three official visits in January for Smith.

Christian is one of the top prospects on the Toledo Rockets recruiting board, and he is coming to Toledo for an official visit this weekend (1/16/2009).

Smith was being recruited to Oklahoma State by Rocket head coach Tim Beckman back while he was still the defensive coordinator there. After becoming the head coach at Toledo, Beckman wanted to keep his sights on Smith and offered him a scholarship to Toledo.

Toledo tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Alex Golesh, is the main recruiter for Christian at Toledo. Golesh was a GA at Oklahoma State before following Beckman to Toledo, so he is very familiar with Smith's recruitment by Oklahoma State as well.

With just a few weeks left before signing day, Christian is starting to develop some favorites in the recruiting process. "I like Ohio and Toledo the best," Christian told Rocket Digest this evening. After a slight pause he added, "and also Northern Iowa."

After his visit to Toledo this weekend, Smith is planning on more visit before sorting things out. That visit will be to Northern Iowa on January 23rd.

Rocket Digest will follow-up with Christian after his visit to Toledo to see how the visit went and where the Rockets stand with his recruitment.
