The Toledo Rockets jumped out to a huge lead in the first half and cruised to a 57-44 victory over the Drexel Dragons last night. Junior Tyrone Kent led the Rockets (2-7) with 14 points, while Ridley Johnson added 10 points.

Toledo took the lead in the opening minutes and never looked back. The Drexel Dragons(5-4) came to Toledo(2-7) after they beat the Rockets 57-52 in Philadelphia last year. Toledo came out shooting strong and took a huge lead midway through the first 26-8 en route to a 57-44 victory in Savage Hall.

Leading the way was Toledo’s trio of juniors who all scored double figures. Junior guard Jonathan Amos led the way with his relentless defense, brought down 9 rebounds and 6 steals. He also scored 11 points, making 5-6 shots from the field in 35 minutes.

The other juniors who posted double digits were Tyrone Kent who was the leading scorer with 14 points, shooting 2-7 from 3-point range and Ridley Johnson added 10 points.

Drexel was in trouble early when their star center Frank Elegar was benched for most of the first half when he picked up 2 fouls early. Elegar finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Both teams were cold from the arc, as Toledo shot 6-21, 28.6% and Drexel was 1-15, 6.7%.

Toledo’s offense was sparked when Jonathan Amos had a breakaway dunk in which his knees almost touched the backboard. Although he was called for a technical for hanging on the rim, it got all 3,901 fans in Savage Hall pumped up.

The Rockets lone senior, Jerrah Young had a breakout game down low with his first double double of the year. Jerrah had 12 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes of play.

Toledo played their three freshmen for a combined 42 minutes but they were only 2-9 shooting and scored 4 points. Corey Bingham is seeing extended playing time at guard in the absence of senior guard Kasheef Payne.

Toledo will use all seven days they have off to rest up there eight players that saw action tonight, before heading to Massachusetts to face off against the 6-2 Minutemen Saturday, December 15th at 7:30pm. Massachusetts has a key win already this season, beating the Syracuse Orange 107-100 on November 28th.
