It's BG week! Need I say more?

The Toledo Rockets and the Bowling Green Falcons will meet on the gridiron for the 72nd time this Friday in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

This rivalry goes way back to 1919, the first year that Bowling Green had a football team. Toledo won that game 6-0.

There has been close games, scoreless ties, blowouts, and accusations of cheating in this rivalry.

The two teams played to ties four times; 6-6 in 1922, 0-0 in 1929, 0-0 in 1930, and 0-0 in 1968.

The longest winning streak in the series is 12 games and belongs to Bowling Green from 1955 through 1966. Toledo's longest winning streak is four games from 1995 through 1998. However, Toledo's 9-3 record over Bowling Green in the last 12 games is the 2nd best in a 12 game span; 2nd only to the BG 12 game winning streak mentioned above.

The first homecoming football game in Toledo history was in 1923 against Bowling Green. Toledo won the game 27-0.

In 1924 controversy erupted after Bowling Green accused Toledo of using an illegal player in a 12-7 victory over the Falcons. All athletic competition between the two schools was suspended from 1925 through 1927 because of this incident.

In 1929 the Rockets and Falcons played to a scoreless 0-0 tie and shared the league title.

In 1935 Toledo defeated Bowling Green 63-0. Angry with the score and accusing Toledo of running up the score, Bowling Green drops Toledo from their football schedules until 1948.

In 1980 the Peace Pipe trophy was awarded to the winner of the UT/BG game for the first time.

In 2000 the MAC agrees to move the rivalry game to the end of the season, where it has been played ever since. The game has become a Thanksgiving week tradition, played either a day or two before Thanksgiving or the day after. This year the game will be played the day after, with a 2:30pm start on ESPNU.
